Mandarin is the southern tip of Jacksonville, on the east bank of the St. Johns River across from Orange Park. From downtown it is about 25 minutes: I-95 south, then San Jose Boulevard, State Road 13, and over to Mandarin Road.
The neighborhood is known for old live oaks draped in Spanish moss, river views and its history. Harriet Beecher Stowe wintered here, and the Mandarin Store and Post Office on Mandarin Road is now a museum.
Homes run from older ranch houses under the oaks to newer subdivisions toward Julington Creek. Plenty of them have long driveways and a second car that never sees the inside of a garage.

Those live oaks are the best part of Mandarin and the hardest on paint. Sap, pollen and bird droppings land on any car parked beneath them, and left in the sun they etch.
A coated car rinses clean. An uncoated one needs a wash before the marks set in.
